darling new neighbors: rocket

this arrived in my inbox with a pixies comparison which usually results in the delete button being desperately jabbed ferocious hard with the nearest blunt object.  not a huge fan of frank black.  and by not a huge fan i mean i’d like him to just. stop. being.  a more accurate aural likening would have been the skewed charm and stumbling ramshackle poppery of the raincoats or beat happening.  or maybe even the breeders.  essentially the good part of the pixies excised from frank blacks sausage fingers and allowed to wander free.  anyway enough overrated rock hate…

darling new neighbors.  like if the vivian girls (more so their new stuff) peddled country instead of psyche.  like if sleater kinney played gypsy folk sometimes.  though i can’t recall tucker and brownstein indulging in the kindof filthtastic dirty talk on take it.  yeah so bit of a chimera here as stylistically it’s all over the fucking shop.  it is what proper journos might describe as quirky or ecelectic.  i’ll stick with all over the fucking shop.  seems more in keeping with the spirit of the record.  and the records in keeping with the spirit of the kinds of indie rock i used to listen to as a young(er) pup and find myself going back to these days.  yearning for my youth perhaps?  temporarily fed up with abstraction and noise and despair?  although given the number of reunions (pavement i’m looking at you) going on i could just pretend it’s still the nineties and i’m not all bitter and old and shit.

where was i?  yeah rocket.  eclectic.  no better singular songular example than electrolux which veers between xylophoned twee and that beefed up post punk thang that the sleaters used to excel at and trembley tremeloey twang.  or sydney which sounds like if kevin shields had written some proper bloody tunes.  or tango’s delicious latin flavoured cabaret stomps and twirls.   or the david lynch-esque stars.   well you get the picture.  more a raincoats making it up as they go along vibe than black francis for sure.  and i for one am happy about that.  and about not hitting delete.

oh and the accordian cover of neil young’s only love can break your heart?  genius.
