nothing people: late night

nothing people late night

this has got nocturnal written all over it, in grubby neon murk.  the vibe here’s one of late night migraines and the relentless fug of cigarette smoke. the light at the end of the tunnel is the brief flare of a struck match.  it’s 2.30am and the world is drunk and weary and hoarse.  that’s the titular late night, one assumes.

been a sideways slide away from the skuzzy garage moves of yore to this kindof sleazy groove.  still that basement feel of damaged guitar chug and addled minds a la 13th floor elevators or the fucked meanderings of the stooges but carpeted with a thick soup of sci-fi synths.  creeps creepily into the unsettling world of suicide’s machine music (see the downward spiral of stick in the mud) or the paisleyish v.u. zones of early dream syndicate.

generally i get an odd queasy feel (in a good way) from the whole record. from the treated vocals to the grinding molar shaking doom keyboard fuzz to the drums that seem at times to belong to a whole different record.

the cover of syd barrett’s late night sums the whole fucking enterprise up. inside me i feel alone and unreal.  yup.

should also mention the cover art by daily void’s collage genius christopher ilth, whose work frankly is fucking brainsqueezingly beautiful.  check him out here.
