dj scotch egg (supersonic part three)

this will probably in all likelihood, almost certainly, be the most genuinely enjoyable thing at supersonic.  dj scotch egg?  he puts the eff you in fun.  he puts the semen in amusement.  actually the last one’s me, but hey.

so who is this (as is traditional) shittily named dj?  real name shigeru ishihara.  of japan, now england. friends with shitmat.  releases records on load.  home of lightning bolt, noxagt, you know….

and the noise?  well it’s produced on gameboys, gameboy software and sequencers and mixers and a bunch of electronic boxes and wires.  i don’t know what they do to be honest.  i know chords.  maybe a 4/4 beat. that’s it.  sometimes he shouts into a boss metal distorted mic.  he seems obsessed with kfc, chickens, nintendo and bach.  it squelches.

mental?  surely.

a big stupid joke?  possibly.

dementedly listenable?  god yes.

you remember playing tetris on that little plastic box, all greens and grays (greys?) and having those 8bit tunes swarming round yr brain like demented dementia skull tapeworms?  that’s scotch egg.

it’s atari teenage riot addled on e-numbers without the poseur anarchism and eyeliner.  it’s computer game music, gabba, happy hardcore and ringtones.  fuck me, it’s almost pop.  how crossover can this shit be? well he’s opened for devo, the go team, lightning bolt and shitmat.  his influences?  stockhausen, john carpenter, steve reich, moondog?!? john cage, bach…

i remember terrorizer covering this shit but i stopped reading magazines ages ago.  i remember earache releasing this shit but i don’t remember the last earache record i bought (entombed, ephel duath maybe). it’s horribly ugly and all manner of catchy anyway.  like ebola.  or hanta.  i can imagine this goes down well at guantanamo.  but it’s a hell of a lot better than david gray.  grey?
