some songs by dananananaykroyd
well here i be with a nice warm whisky glow, and not one but two new aural charms whizzing through my earholes.
the first peter wright you can read more about here.
the second dananananaykroyd is the guitar opposite and not excellently what i was expecting. at all. praise be to marion. mairi. whateveryernameis.
okay the name. to me it sounds like an amusing line from a mclusky song. or some drunk guy’s joke version of the batman theme song. it’s a fucking genius name. it’s awkward. it’s funny. it’s really goddam difficult to put into a text message. and amusingly their website stats the misspellings. it ticks all the boxes.
so they play music. the kids seem to like them. i’ll assume they’re a ‘new band’ mainly because i don’t have anything of theirs in my record collection, patronising bastard that i am, and coz they’re still in the singles/ep market. they were supposed to have a new record out on jealous records which i was looking forward to getting and popping my dananananakroyd cherry but apparently it’s on financial hiatus. for now.
so i have a few songs on empeethree and seveninch format to ‘listen’ to.
my first impressions from the some dresses / genuine lbs record is that it is ace. capital eh capital cee capital ee. the cd confirms this assessment.
no matter how old i get i still dig that fast jerky late eighties early nineties america indie rock shit. i cut my teeth on touch & go and dischord and amphetamine reptile and as sure as kenyans love machetes that’s what it sounds like. i hope nobody would be offended if i mentioned sleater kinney (with boys) or sonic youth or fugazi or helmet; maybe modernally and geographically more significant with we are the physics and the futureheads. what it says on their myspace is ‘the year punk broke’. but maybe that’s a joke.
what they have got is speed, riffs, hand claps, ric flair style woooos and some distortion pedals. they’ve got melody, rhythm and noise which are the three things i look for in a bloody good song. and even if sometimes it sounds like the drummers using the soles of his trainers as drums and they occasionally bear a passing resemblance to jetplane landing (am i the only one on that boat of hate?) it is worth a listen.
anyhoo. i actually like what i’ve heard and i hate all new music until they’ve had at least a five song ep out. expecting some kind of postpunkpoppish or fey indie folky smithsy shite which a fair amount of west of scotland music sounds like recently i was pleasantly surprised.
here’s some songs for you (excuse the poor vinyl to digital conversion):
